“Onye kwe, Chi ya ekwe.”
"If a man (or woman) says yes, his "chi" will also say yes".
In Igbo cosmology, one's 'chi' is a guardian spirit received by everyone at birth from the creator. One's successes and or failures were associated with his or her 'chi'. This proverb expresses however that if one was determined to succeed, one's 'chi' would oblige. There is a better known English derivative of this proverb - "heaven helps those who help themselves". Kudos to the person who borrowed and translated it to English:)!
Okay maybe it it wasn't borrowed from the Igbo version but you get the drift. Goodluck, chance or the gods will not take the place of your own determination and hard work. First say "yes" and give it your best shot - perhaps you will find the stars aligned. But it begins with you.
If you can say yes, your 'chi' will say yes!
